What is The Society of NLP?
The Society of NLP is the certification body established by Richard Bandler, who created NLP together with John Grinder in the 1970s. It is the oldest certifying organisation in the field, and it works through licensing: rather than running every training itself, the Society licenses individual trainers around the world to teach and certify according to its standards. How does the licence system work?
Only trainers who hold a current licence from the Society may issue its certificates — that licence is the whole mechanism. NLP is not regulated by any government, which means anyone, anywhere, can legally sell an “NLP certification” of their own invention. The Society’s answer to that open market is lineage: a licensed trainer has been trained and authorised within Bandler’s organisation, agrees to teach to its curriculum standards, and issues certificates that trace back to the source of the field. Two honest caveats belong here. First, a Society licence guarantees lineage and curriculum, not charisma — there are excellent and mediocre trainers inside every organisation. Second, other serious NLP associations exist (INLPTA, ABNLP and others run their own certification systems); the Society’s distinction is being the original body, run by a co-creator of the field, not being the only legitimate one.
What are the levels of Society of NLP certification?
Three levels matter in practice: Practitioner, Master Practitioner, and Trainer. Each builds on the one before, and you cannot skip stages:

How do you get Society of NLP certified?
You train with a licensed trainer, demonstrate the skills live, and receive your certificate through their licence. The path is short to describe:
- Find a licensed trainer. Ask directly whether their licence with The Society of NLP is current — a legitimate trainer answers without hesitation.
- Check the format fits how skills are built. Live practice with supervision is where NLP becomes ability; group size decides how much supervision you actually get.
- Complete the Practitioner training. In an intensive format, that is around seven consecutive days of teach–demo–practise loops.
- Demonstrate the techniques live. Serious trainings assess by watching you work across the week, not with a written test.
- Receive your certificate. A Society certificate arrives signed by Richard Bandler and John La Valle, issued under your trainer’s licence.

How do you verify a Society of NLP certificate?
Check the trainer, not just the paper. Three questions settle it:
- Does the trainer hold a current licence from The Society of NLP, and will they say so in writing?
- Who trained the trainer? A real lineage can be named; a vague answer is a warning sign.
- Does the certificate itself name The Society of NLP and carry the official signatures — rather than only the school’s own logo?

Is a Society of NLP certification recognised internationally?
Within the NLP field, yes — it is the original certification body and its certificates are recognised by practitioners and schools worldwide. But no NLP certificate, from any body, is a government-recognised qualification: recognition in NLP is a matter of lineage and reputation, not law.
Does a Society of NLP practitioner certificate expire?
No. Practitioner and Master Practitioner certificates document a completed training and do not expire. Trainer licences are different: they must be kept current with the Society, which is why checking that a trainer’s licence is active matters more than checking their certificate.
Can you get a Society of NLP certification online?
Most Society-licensed trainings are in person, because certification rests on demonstrating the techniques live with real people under a trainer’s observation. Some licensed trainers offer online or hybrid formats; if you consider one, ask how live practice and assessment are handled before you book.
What does a Society of NLP certification cost?
The Society does not set prices — trainers do. Across Europe, in-person Practitioner trainings typically range from roughly €1,500 to €3,500 depending on length, location and group size. Treat prices far below that range as a prompt to check what is actually included.
Do I need a degree or prior training to start?
No. Practitioner is the entry level and has no formal prerequisites — no degree, no coaching background, no prior NLP reading. Everything the certification assesses is taught and practised during the training itself.
