When Was NLP Created? A Dated Timeline

When Was NLP Created? A Dated Timeline

NLP was created between 1972 and 1976 at the University of California, Santa Cruz, by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. There is no single founding day, because the method arrived in stages: the first modelling groups ran from 1972, the first book appeared in 1975, and the name Neuro-Linguistic Programming was attached to the work in 1976. Anyone who gives you one tidy date is rounding.

QuestionShort answer
When was NLP created?Between 1972 and 1976, in and around Santa Cruz, California.
Who created it?Richard Bandler and John Grinder, with Frank Pucelik in the earliest groups.
What is the first published date?1975, with The Structure of Magic, Volume I.
When was the name first used?1976, when Bandler and Grinder settled on Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
Why is the date disputed? The method was taught in workshops for roughly three years before it had a name or a book.

When exactly was NLP created?

The work began in 1972 and the label existed by 1976, so the honest answer is a four-year window rather than a date. If you need one year for a citation, 1975 is the defensible choice, because that is when the first book put the method in front of readers who had never been in the room.

The setting matters more than most retellings admit. Bandler was an undergraduate at UC Santa Cruz who had been transcribing Gestalt therapy tapes for a publisher and had started running practice groups of his own. Grinder was an assistant professor of linguistics on the same campus, with a background in transformational grammar. The collaboration started when Grinder sat in on one of those groups and began asking what Bandler was doing that produced the results.

What happened in each year?

Four years carried the work from a student practice group to a published method with a name. The table below is the sequence most historians of the field agree on.

YearWhat happenedWhy it counts
1972Bandler runs Gestalt practice groups at Santa Cruz; Grinder joins to analyse what is working. The modelling question gets asked for the first time.
1973 to 1974The language patterns of Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir are worked into a teachable set of questions. The Meta Model takes shape, the first real NLP tool.
1975The Structure of Magic, Volume I is published. The pair also begin studying Milton Erickson. The method becomes public and citable.
1976The Structure of Magic, Volume II appears; the name Neuro-Linguistic Programming is adopted. The field gets its identity and its label.
1979Frogs into Princes is published from seminar transcripts.NLP reaches a wide general audience for the first time.

Two of those entries are worth separating, because they get merged constantly. The Structure of Magic is a book about language: it took what Perls and Satir did with questions and turned it into the set of questions that recovers deleted and distorted information. The Erickson work, published as Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, went in the opposite direction, towards deliberately vague language. Both were in progress in 1975, and they pull in opposite directions on purpose.

Why is there no single founding date?

Because NLP was taught before it was named, and named before it was defined. Most disciplines get founded by an institution, a paper or a professional body, and each of those produces a date. NLP had none of the three for its first decade.

There was no founding institute, no accrediting body, and no peer-reviewed paper announcing the field. What existed was a group of people in northern California running workshops, writing books from transcripts, and disagreeing productively. The absence of a founding moment is not a historical accident to tidy up. It explains a great deal about why the field later fragmented into competing associations, and why the question of what accredited actually means in NLP still has no clean answer.

Who else was in the room?

More people than the two names on the covers. The early Santa Cruz circle included Frank Pucelik, who co-led the first Meta Model groups with Bandler, along with Judith DeLozier, Leslie Cameron-Bandler, David Gordon, Stephen Gilligan and Robert Dilts.

  • Frank Pucelik ran the earliest groups alongside Bandler and is routinely left out of the standard origin story.
  • Robert Dilts joined as a student and later contributed the logical levels model and Sleight of Mouth.
  • Judith DeLozier and Leslie Cameron-Bandler shaped much of what became the Practitioner curriculum.
  • Gregory Bateson, then living near Santa Cruz, was an intellectual influence and introduced Bandler and Grinder to Milton Erickson.

If you want the fuller version of who did what, our article on who actually invented NLP and how the credit is disputed goes through the claims one by one. The short version relevant to dating: attribution disputes are one reason the founding year moves depending on who is telling the story. The glossary entry on the working partnership between Bandler and Grinder covers how that collaboration later broke down.

What did NLP look like in 1976 compared with now?

In 1976 NLP was almost entirely about language, and today it is mostly taught as a toolkit of change techniques. That shift is the biggest difference between the original material and a modern Practitioner course.

The first two books contain no swish pattern, no timeline work, no fast phobia cure. They contain grammar: how people delete, distort and generalise when they speak, and which questions bring the missing material back. The visual techniques most people now associate with NLP arrived later, through the submodality work of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Somebody who read only the 1975 material would not recognise the average weekend NLP workshop.

Why the founding date is worth knowing

Because it tells you what NLP was built to be, and that changes how you evaluate it. A method assembled in 1972 by watching three unusually effective therapists is a set of observations about what worked, not a theory tested against a control group. Fifty years on, that is still the fairest description of it.

Students ask me about the origins more often than I expected when I started teaching, and the reason is usually not historical curiosity. They are trying to work out how much weight the method can carry. Knowing the dates helps: it explains why the research base is thin, why there is no single governing body, and why two trainers can teach the same technique differently and both be within the tradition. I would rather people know that going in. On the seven-day Practitioner training here in Lisbon we cover the origins on the first morning, partly so nobody has to discover the messiness later and feel misled.

Frequently asked questions about when NLP was created

What year was NLP officially founded?

There was no official founding, because no institution or professional body created NLP. The work started in 1972, the first book came out in 1975, and the name Neuro-Linguistic Programming was adopted in 1976. Sources that cite a single year are usually picking one of those three moments.

Where was NLP created?

In Santa Cruz, California, mostly on and around the University of California campus there. Richard Bandler was an undergraduate at UCSC and John Grinder was an assistant professor of linguistics. The Erickson study trips took the pair to Phoenix, Arizona, but the method itself was assembled in Santa Cruz.

What was the first NLP book?

The Structure of Magic, Volume I by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, published in 1975 by Science and Behavior Books. It presents the Meta Model, built from the language patterns of Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir. Volume II followed in 1976.

Who came up with the name Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Bandler and Grinder settled on the term in 1976. The three parts refer to the nervous system, to language, and to the patterned sequences of behaviour that the two produce together. The name was chosen after the method already existed, which is why it reads more like a description than a discovery.

Is NLP older than cognitive behavioural therapy?

No. Aaron Beck’s cognitive therapy dates from the 1960s and Albert Ellis published rational emotive therapy in the 1950s, both earlier than NLP’s 1972 to 1976 window. The two traditions developed separately, one inside clinical research and one outside it, which is a large part of why their evidence bases look so different today.
