Richard Bandler Certification: What It Really Means

Richard Bandler Certification: What It Really Means

A Richard Bandler certification is an NLP certificate issued under licence from The Society of NLP — the certification body founded by Bandler, co-creator of NLP — and it carries his signature alongside that of Society president John La Valle. It does not usually mean Bandler taught you personally: most people earn it by training with one of the trainers he has licensed around the world. That distinction is worth understanding before you book anything, so here is what the certification actually covers, how you get one, and how much the signature should weigh in your decision.

Who is Richard Bandler?

Richard Bandler co-created Neuro-Linguistic Programming with linguist John Grinder at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in the 1970s. Together they studied how exceptional therapists — Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson — got their results, and turned those patterns into teachable techniques; their book The Structure of Magic (1975) marks the starting point of the field. The method they used, studying excellence closely enough to transfer it, is what NLP calls modeling, and the full story of the two founders is worth reading in our entry on Richard Bandler and John Grinder. After the two men went separate ways, Bandler established The Society of NLP as his certification body, and he continues to run seminars internationally.

What does “certified by Richard Bandler” actually mean?

It means your training was run under a licence from Bandler’s organisation and your certificate carries his printed signature — not that he watched you work. The Society of NLP operates through licensed trainers: each one has been authorised within Bandler’s organisation, teaches to the Society’s curriculum standards, and issues certificates through their licence. The signature is the visible end of that chain. We explain the whole system — levels, costs, and how the licence mechanism works — in our guide to the Society of NLP certification.

An honest word about marketing: some course pages lean on Bandler’s name in ways that suggest personal mentorship. Unless you attend one of his own seminars, you are learning from the trainer in the room — which is exactly why the trainer’s licence, skill and group size deserve more scrutiny than the famous name on the certificate.

How do you get a certificate signed by Richard Bandler?

Train with a Society-licensed trainer and pass the live assessment — four steps in practice:

  1. Choose a licensed trainer. Ask whether their Society of NLP licence is current and who trained them — both answers should come without hesitation.
  2. Complete a Practitioner training. Intensive formats run around seven consecutive days; modular formats spread the same material over several weekends.
  3. Demonstrate the techniques live. Certification rests on the trainer watching you run the patterns with real people during supervised practice — not on a written exam.
  4. Receive the certificate. It arrives through your trainer’s licence, signed by Richard Bandler and John La Valle.

If you want to do this in English, in a small group, our Practitioner week in Lisbon runs under a Society of NLP licence — seven days, maximum ten participants, certificate signed by Bandler and La Valle.

Does the signature on your certificate actually matter?

Less than the training behind it — but more than nothing, because NLP is an unregulated field. No government anywhere licenses NLP titles, so the market ranges from rigorous trainings to certificates sold with an online video course. In that landscape, a Bandler-signed certificate does one specific job: it ties your qualification to a named, checkable lineage that leads back to a co-creator of the field. What it cannot do is substitute for the things that decide whether you can actually use NLP afterwards — supervised practice, honest feedback, and a trainer who watches you work. A famous signature on top of a weak training is still a weak training.

I trained with Richard Bandler myself, and what stayed with me was not the certificate — it was watching how much precision sits underneath techniques that look effortless from the outside. That is the standard I try to hold my own Lisbon groups to, and it is also why I tell applicants to judge any training, including mine, by the practice time and supervision it gives them rather than by the names on the paperwork. — Carolin Mallmann, Licensed Trainer of The Society of NLP, Lisbon

FAQ

Can I train with Richard Bandler personally?

Yes — Bandler runs his own seminars, typically large events announced through The Society of NLP’s official channels. Most people, however, earn their Bandler-signed certificate with a licensed trainer in a smaller local training, which offers far more individual practice and supervision than a large seminar can.

Is a Bandler-signed certificate better than other NLP certificates?

It documents lineage to a co-creator of NLP, which is a real advantage in an unregulated market — but it does not automatically mean the training was better. Judge any course by its trainer, group size, live practice and assessment first; treat the signature as confirmation of lineage, not proof of quality.

Did Richard Bandler create NLP alone?

No. NLP was co-created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s, building on close study of the therapists Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson. The two later went separate ways, and Bandler’s certification body is The Society of NLP.

How long does it take to earn a Bandler-signed Practitioner certificate?

In an intensive format, around seven consecutive full training days, with assessment happening through supervised practice during the week. Modular formats spread the same curriculum over several weekends. Either way, the skill consolidates in the weeks of real-world practice afterwards.

Is “Richard Bandler certified” a legally protected title?

No. NLP titles are not protected by law in any country. The Society of NLP licence system is a private quality mechanism, not state regulation — which is precisely why checking that a trainer’s licence is current matters so much.
